Kinder Surprise Egg Marriage Proposal

April 9th marks the 9th anniversary of our awesomely creative (and geeky) engagement. Matthew had been up late “working” for many nights, which is the norm, but this time his real reason for burning the midnight oil was this incredible creation.

We used to buy Kinder Surprise Egg candies for each other all the time. If you aren’t familiar, it is a chocolate egg that contains a tiny, whimsical toy with assembly instructions inside. They are so much fun — maybe too much fun — sadly, the US banned them from import a few years ago.

Matthew painstakingly took apart the chocolate egg and replaced the toy inside with a small robot figure and illustrated instructions on how to assemble him into a tiny MatthewBot on bended knee. Also inside was my amazing ring! He then reassembled and rewrapped the egg to look virtually untouched.

Obviously, I said yes.

Thank you SwissmissVanity Fair Italy, Daily Mail, BoingBoing and blogs around the world for featuring our engagement story.

What a cool engagement story :) and I have to let you know- I can easily buy these here at my local grocer in newark, nj. Maybe they smuggle them in?

I proposed to my wife in a similar way. However I did not include the Robot and instructions. Just getting the ring inside and closing it up to look untouched was a feet in itself. Please let me know the name of that Newark grocer as I don’t live in NYC any longer and can not find them in my part of the world.

Something is wrong with your Pinterest button. I can’t pin it because Pinterest thinks that you’re spammer or delivers an inappropriate content. :/

Thanks for the note. I contacted Pinterest and it seems to be working fine now.

I did this too tree years ago! I did not include a toy, but the ring itself and a replica of Kinder instructions that I customized for the engagement ring.

    Here’s alink to see it:

At first, she believed it was a particulary realistic toy ring, but then she understand that it was my proposal and she said yes! She still carry the plastic egg with the instructions in her purse everyday!

Kudos to you to push it a little further and good luck to the happy couple!
